THE POWER OF “SO WHAT”: A LESSON FROM BRITTNEY GRINER

I’m a huge supporter of Baylor basketball star Brittney Griner and Essence Magazine.

Of course, I’m a proud Baylor alum and give them love here whenever I can.  AND I hope you regularly visit the Essence page of my site.

This weekend, the Editor-in-Chief of Essence Magazine, Constance White, one of the most dynamic people I know, took on some of the nasty things people have said about Brittney.  She did so in the most elegant way, all while pointing out what life lessons we can take from the way Brittney carries herself.

She calls it the “Power of So What?

Here is part of what White wrote:

“She is unusually tall.  So what?

Usually lanky.  So what?

She has an usually deep voice.  So what?

Some have said she looks like a man.  I say she looks like a human.

But what’s really important and real here?  She can still play basketball better than most.  She seems amazingly hardworking, fun and levelheaded.

So what if she looks a little different?  We can all take a lesson from Griner, a young woman of great poise.

She hasn’t let self-consciousness or other people’s discomfort, mess or rudeness stop her. She is the one defining what she should focus on.”

I’m sure it hurts to hear people call her a man. She’s human. Words do hurt some of us. I get disturbed by it myself. People are extremely reckless with their words. I like how some folks say whatever they want and act like the people they insult are supposed to just shrug it off and not be sensitive about it. She’s someone’s daughter. It would be wise to watch what we say. Feelings do get hurt.
