It’s not often I’m starstruck. When I was able to sit down with the legendary artist Chaka Khan, I was close to having one of those moments.
This is someone whose music I don’t remember not knowing. No one’s voice is like the gift that is hers. Whether she was with Rufus or by herself, her music touched me and millions of others.
When I had the privilege of interviewing her at the Essence Music Festival last year, what kept me from being starstruck is just how real she is. She did not act a star with me. Chaka presented herself as a woman who had been on a journey of mistakes and triumphs, and she wanted to share them.
What you will find listening to her is, she struggled to know her value and she wants more for young women today than the “barbie doll syndrome.”
Chaka Khan is every woman.

For me, the biggest thing that I needed to overcome is that I’m not perfect. Good is okay and others need to be okay with me just being good!
