5/29/21–  This story has struck a nerve with viewers in Houston, HLN viewers across the country and even people who have heard it around the world.

17 year-old honors student Diane Tran thrown in jail for truancy.

She admits missing school because she is tired from working two job to help her siblings, while maintaining nearly straight A’s and taking a rigorous course-load.

Sherry Williams broke this story for KHOU.  She says Diane doesn’t like the way her parents were portrayed, even though she has been left with the responsibilities of an adult.

I think this is one of those case where the judge’s intention of wanting to make an example of her truancy but without knowing (or any intention to find out it seems) what caused her to miss her school. In the end it’s probably going to backfire on the judge (and rightly so imo, if you don’t care enough on finding out the fact before you sentenced a person then you shouldn’t be a judge). As for her, while undoubtedly it was an unfair punishment for her trying to support her family I think it could be good for her down the road if people care enough to try and help her. She has to be a very strong person to have done all that she had done and it could only be good for her future… my hats off for this strong young lady.

That is a nice update to hear, it s my opinion that there should be an application in place providing information and proof on why you should have a little bit of room on why tardiness can be a problem that way time is saved an important things like keeping your honors can ease the worry on a hard studying and working young girl like her :)
