Essence What Matters

You hear me say it every time I do my regular What Matters segment on HLN: “This gives us a chance to look at issues in the African-American community that affect everyone.” You may notice I put a little emphasis on everyone.

While we are more alike than different, and while we are all equal, we are not all the same. But that’s what makes our communities vibrant — what we all bring to the table from our backgrounds, cultures and experiences.

Here are some of the ‘What Matters’ stories I report on in partnership with Essence Magazine. Essence is the largest magazine of its kind, groundbreaking in fact. It served women of color when no other magazines thought their beauty had value. Today, the issues range from education to family to empowering women and girls.
